Polling of Egyptians suggests that the general program of the Muslim Brothers is still supported even as their tactics and governing are rejected. In a Pew survey earlier this year, 74 percent of Egyptians said they want sharia to be “the official law of the land,” and 55 percent said sharia should apply to non-Muslims, which in Egypt includes 15 million Christian Copts. The criminal court of Beni Suef (in Egypt, 115 km south of Cairo) has sentenced an entire family to prison for converting to Christianity. Nadia Mohamed Ali and her children Mohab, Maged, Sherif, Amira, Amir, and Nancy Ahmed Mohamed abdel-Wahab will spend 15 years in prison. In an attack lasting 18 hours on 5 July, four Coptic Christian men were killed and four others were seriously injured. An angry mob armed with metal bars, knives, tree branches and hammers attacked Christian homes and businesses in Nagah Hassan, 18 km west of Luxor, after the dead body of a Muslim man was discovered near the homes of Christian families. There are only about a million people in the Sinai and over 83 million in the rest of Egypt. About half the Sinai population is Bedouin, the rest are Egyptians who came as government officials or to work on the Suez Canal or the new tourist enterprises in the Sinai. Discriminated against by Egyptians, and feeling disdain for Egyptian culture, many Bedouin find themselves unable to get jobs and their traditional lifestyle (herding and trade) is no longer able to support all of them. Smuggling has always been popular, and people are eager to get into Israel (for jobs) and terror groups in Gaza pay well for weapons. Terrorists in Sinai have cash and will pay for shelter and other assistance from Bedouin. In the last two years the number of terrorists operating in Sinai has gone from a few hundred to over a thousand. These guys have nowhere to go but Egypt because the Israeli counter-terror measures of the last decade have made it virtually impossible to carry out terrorist attacks inside Israel. Since another popular uprising (backed by the military) overthrew the recently elected Islamic government in early July the Sinai terrorists have been at war with Egypt. Despite vigorous and frequent military and police raids in Sinai, most of the terrorists there have remained hidden, except when they attack the security forces or government officials. Noting that some of these terrorists still had bases in Sinai, for the last month Egypt has been shutting off access from Sinai into Gaza. That means destroying over 300 smuggling tunnels and destroying all buildings from the Gaza border fence and 500 meters into Egypt. This makes digging new tunnels more difficult, and easier to detect. The one legal crossing from Gaza to Egypt is shut much of the time and when open carefully monitored when opened. Muslims often consider the building of a church in their area as an insult... Ibrahim Khalaf is demanding full justice for his destroyed house despite pressure for him to withdraw his police complaints... Khalaf said he has been warned that if he doesn't withdraw his complaints "there will be blood." Those who issued the warning even threatened his daughters, saying they "can be kidnapped" and that "the security services won't stay in the village forever to protect you." Muslim radicals have attacked properties and homes belonging to Coptic Christians in Egypt after rumors circulated about a church being constructed. According to International Christian Concern, the attacks took place in Manshiet El-Naghamish village located in the Sohag Governorate in Upper Egypt. More than 2,000 Coptic Christians live in the village, with the nearest church being over three miles away. When Christian villagers in El-Naghamish built a four-story building to be used as a community center, preschool and retirement home, Muslims in the vicinity assumed that the building would become a church.
