Most (89 percent) of Burmese are Buddhist with the rest being Moslem (4 percent), Christian (4 percent), Hindu (one percent) and various other (two percent). In some cities and towns Moslems are 10-30 percent of the local population. Relations are not always harmonious between ethnic (Buddhist) Burmese and Moslems (who are often not ethnic Burmese). Islam is the most intolerant religion in the region and Hindus and Buddhists have long reciprocated. This has caused centuries of tension that occasionally breaks out into deadly violence. The Moslems in Burma have a higher birth rate than ethnic Burmese and there is a fear that, long-term, Moslems are trying to force ethnic Burmese out of Burma. While the Hindu, Christian and other religious minorities strive to get along with the Buddhist majority the Moslems are less inclined to do this. Then there have been several decades of increasing Islamic terrorism worldwide. Some local Buddhist religious and political leaders have exploited the anti-Moslem feelings to expand their own power. The government study group did not see any quick solution to the problem. Shutting down anti-Moslem media activity by Buddhist religious and political leaders cannot be done openly because most Burmese agree that the Moslems are a problem. Foreign governments from the West and the Islamic world urge the government to crack down but since Burma is now a democracy making such a move would be political suicide and result in politicians getting elected who are even more anti-Moslem. source: http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/myanmar/articles/20130430.aspx

A sizable number of mujahideen were present and concentrated in the province of Arakan, Burma. There were many Muslim Rebels in Rakhine State of Burma in 1949—a year after achieving Independence. Mir Cassim was the leader of the group known as "Mujahids", a group that consisted primarily of immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh. This particular movement was crushed by the Burmese Army in 1950s. Mir Cassim himself was assassinated in Cox's Bazar. This movement under Cassim collapsed after his death and his followers surrendered. When asked about their race, they called themselves as "Rohingyas". They were much more active before the 1962 coup d'etat by General Ne Win. Ne Win carried out some military operations targeting them over a period of two decades. The prominent one was "Operation King Dragon" which took place in 1978; as a result, many Muslims in the region fled to neighboring Bangladesh as refugees. Nevertheless, the Burmese mujahideen remained active within the remote areas of Arakan. Their associations with Bangladeshi mujahideen were significant but they have extended their networks to the international level and countries such as Pakistan, Malaysia, et al., during the recent years. They collect donations, and receive religious military training outside of Burma. source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mujahidin#Burma

Burma is a mainly Buddhist country, but 8-9 per cent of its 60 million people are Muslim. There is an open resentment of Muslims, openly expressed and they are referred to with the derogatory term ‘kala.’ Ashin Wirathu is a firmly anti-Islamic monk who was jailed in 2003 for inciting anti-Muslim violence. He was released last year as part of the broader amnesty for prisoners and admitted being at Meiktila, although insists he played no part in the violence. ‘We Buddhist Burmese are too soft,” he told the BBC in an interview.  "We lack patriotic pride." He urges Buddhists all over the country to boycott Muslim businesses and hands out stickers printed with the number ’969′, which symbolise elements of Buddhism, Wirathu accuses Muslim men of repeatedly raping Buddhist women, of using their wealth to lure Buddhist women into marriage, then imprisoning them in the home. source:  http://sheikyermami.com/2013/04/23/burma-we-buddhist-burmese-are-too-soft/

Moslem countries are pressing Burma to do more to protect their Moslem population and treat Rohingya Moslems from Bangladesh better (as in granting them citizenship). The Burmese find this hypocritical because many Moslem countries, including wealthy Gulf States, refuse to grant citizenship to Moslems who have lived within their borders for many generations... Burmese also blame the wealthy Gulf Arab states for long subsidizing aggressive and anti-Buddhist Moslem missionaries and religious schools. Meanwhile, Burma has sentenced dozens of Buddhists to prison for crimes committed during the past year of anti-Moslem violence. source: http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/myanmar/articles/20130729.aspx

Buddhist monks, despite their reputation as devotees of peace, are still able to accept and respond to reality; are still governed by common sense.  Unlike the West, whose sense of reality has been so thoroughly warped by a nonstop media propaganda campaign emanating from ubiquitous TVs and computer screens, conditioning Americans how to think and what to believe, “third world” Buddhist monks are acquainted with reality on the ground.  They know that, left unchecked, the Muslim minority living among them—which began hostilities—will grow more aggressive, a historically demonstrative fact. As in other countries, the Muslims of Myanmar have engaged in violence, jihadi terror, and rape of Buddhist girls.  And that’s as a minority.  Myanmar’s Buddhists are also cognizant that, in neighboring nations like Bangladesh where Muslims are the majority, all non-Muslims are being ruthlessly persecuted into extinction.  But even in bordering Thailand, where Buddhists are the majority and Muslims a minority, in the south where Muslims make for large numbers, thousands of Buddhists—men, women, and children—have been slaughtered, beheaded, and raped, as separatist Muslims try to cleanse the region of all “infidel” presence. source: http://frontpagemag.com/2013/raymond-ibrahim/buddhist-extremism/

Buddhist mobs burn down Muslim homes and shops: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/25/burma-buddhist-mobs-burn-muslim-homes

Violence between the Moslem Rohingya and police continues along the west coast. Buddhist clerics continue to call for the expulsion of all Moslems, describing Moslems as a constant threat to all Burmese... The Rohingya Moslems, living near the Bangladesh border, were not considered Burmese citizens but rather illegal migrants. source: http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/myanmar/articles/20130907.aspx

Myanmar will not allow itself to be pressured by a U.N. resolution calling on it to grant citizenship to members of the Muslim ethnic minority that identify themselves as Rohingya, an official said Thursday. Presidential spokesman Ye Htut insisted in a posting on his Facebook page that the government does not recognize that there is a group called Rohingya, referring to them instead as Bengalis. source: http://www.sunherald.com/2013/11/21/5134466/myanmar-govt-un-cant-force-rohingya.html

Despite continued pressure from the United States as well as the UN and the Moslem world to do something about the continuing bad treatment of Burmese Moslems nothing much is happening. As a result over 50,000 Rohingya Moslems have hired smugglers to get them from Burma (or exile in Bangladesh) to Thailand and Malaysia in 2014. Any kind of peace deal with the Rohingya is unlikely as far as most Burmese are concerned. There is growing popular anger among Burmese towards Moslems in general and the Rohingya in particular. This is fed by the continuing reports of Islamic terrorism word-wide and especially in the region (Thailand, India, Bangladesh and China). The wealthy Arab oil states have put their considerable diplomatic and economic pressure on the UN to make a fuss but the Burmese generals long insisted that this could be safely ignored as they have been ignoring UN criticism for over half a century and getting away with it. The Arabs don’t get a lot of sympathy outside the Moslem world because anyone who can count notes that there is a lot more oppression and violence against non-Moslems by Moslems than the other way around. source: http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/myanmar/articles/20141217.aspx

Burmese government blames an outbreak of Islamic terrorist activity in the northwest (Rakhine State) on the RSO (Rohingya Solidarity Organization) in cooperation with local Islamic terrorist groups that have been financed by organizations and wealthy individuals in Arabia. Within a week of the October 9th attack on three border posts four local Islamic terror groups released videos on the Internet declaring war (jihad) on the government... The four local Islamic terrors groups were AMM (Aqa Mul Mujahidin), FMA (Faith Movement of Arakan), Harakat al Yaqin and KMR (Kebangkitan Mujahid Rohingya). The government says AMM was the main instigator and was working closely with RSO and Islamic terrorist groups in Pakistan... Some Rohingya have left Burma and joined Islamic terror groups elsewhere. India has identified Rohingya Islamic terrorists trained in Pakistan who were killed once they crossed into Indian Kashmir. It is also known that Pakistan supported Islamic terrorist groups like LeT (Lashkar e Taiba) train non-Pakistanis in several of their camps in northern Pakistan. Bangladesh has arrested some of these Pakistan trained Rohingya who had come to reinforce the beleaguered Islamic terrorist groups in Bangladesh... Most Rohingyas are Bengalis, or people from Bengal (now Bangladesh) who began migrating to Burma during the 19th century. At that time the British colonial government ran Bangladesh and Burma, and allowed this movement, even though the Buddhist Burmese opposed it. source: https://www.strategypage.com/qnd/myanmar/articles/20161028.aspx

In the northwest (Rakhine State, Burma) the violence continues two months after a major attack on three border posts. There were about 400 Rohingya Moslem attackers armed with firearms and edged weapons. The initial attack left 33 attackers and five border policemen dead. Over the next few weeks another four policemen were killed and even more local civilians. Four local Islamic terror groups released videos on the Internet declaring war (jihad) on the government... Most Rohingyas are Bengalis, or people from Bengal (now Bangladesh) who began migrating to Burma during the 19th century. At that time the British colonial government ran Bangladesh and Burma, and allowed this movement, even though the Buddhist Burmese opposed it. Britain recognized the problem too late, and the Bengali Moslems were still in Burma when Britain gave up its South Asian colonies after World War II (1939-45). Any kind of peace deal with the Rohingya is unlikely as far as most Burmese are concerned. There is growing popular anger among Burmese towards Moslems in general and the Rohingya in particular. Rohingya... women... get married at an early age and have as many children as possible... Domestic abuse is rife among the Rohingya... Over one six-day period in October, United Nations staff recorded 306 incidents of gender-based violence in the camps. Of those attacks, 96 percent required a referral to emergency medical services, officials said... Rohingya men can be forthright about their impulses. “Of course I beat my wife,” said Sadrul Ameen, who arrived in a Bangladeshi refugee camp three months ago with his pregnant wife and child... “I beat my wife to keep her on track,” Mr. Ameen added. “I beat her if she does not listen to me. There are many reasons to beat her.” source: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/23/world/asia/rohingya-women-abuse-myanmar.html
