This is the statement with which Peter Cohen, an American visiting professor at Munich University, concludes his recent study in Germany... Very few Turks in Germany have a regular job; about 20%. The other 80% live on the so-called Hartz IV (state social benefits). 70% of their children have no GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education); they left school before they finished their basic education... According to the German state benefit system, every adult citizen who possesses the German nationality, unemployed and cannot find an appropriate job, is entitled to get monthly 482 € ($627). Additionally, parents get for each child under 18 years old, 200 € ($261), plus all their monthly expenditures in terms of rent, heating, power, health insurance, and public transport. "Amazingly enough some Turks who live on the generous state benefits can afford to buy a house or an apartment and drive luxurious cars like Mercedes or BMW." Says Klaus, a landlord whose tenants are a case in point. Kamal (46 years old) and his wife Shadia (42 years old) have ten children under 18 and live on Hartz IV (the German social benefit system). Zakid Khan, a former Muslim resident in Germany wrote a book: "The Criminal Acts of the Prophet Mohammed" (published in English and German). German Muslims are trying to silence him. On the one hand they pursued a prosecution against him in the Darmstadt courts; on the other they tried to arrange his assassination. The prosecution, initiated by Muslim activist Stefan Salim Nagi, collapsed in June. Nagi was approached by Muslim convert and prominent Salafist preacher, Pierre Vogel, to arrange Khan's assassination. Vogel wanted Nagi to give him 30,000 euros to pay for the "hit". This was a step too far for Nagi, though, who went to the authorities. Politically Incorrect, the most prominent German-speaking anti-Islam website, has up to 120,000 visitors per day. In addition to Die Freiheit, radical anti-Islamists have founded the political party Pro Deutschland ("Pro Germany") and the citizens' movement Pax Europa. They are currently attempting to gain influence over the euro-skeptic Alternative for Germany Party (AfD) -- the former federal chairman of Die Freiheit has called for his followers to support the AfD in this May's European elections. According to a study by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, 56 percent of Germans consider Islam to be an "archaic religion, incapable of fitting into modern life" and many believe religious freedom for Muslims should be "substantially restricted..." There are about four million Muslims in Germany, almost half of which have a German passport. The BfV estimates that about 42,000 (or 1 percent) of them are fundamentalists and 1,000 are potentially violent. Anti-Islamists generally don't differentiate between Sunnis, Shiites and Alevi, or between militant Islamists and peaceful believers. In their imagination, Islam isn't a religion but a political ideology that must be fought. Muslims are accused of trying to take over the world, undermining the sovereignty of democratic states, infiltrating their legal systems. In the civic center of Bonn-Bad Godesberg, about 50 older men and women are listening to a talk by Marie-Luise Hoffmann-Polzoni, the chairperson of the Womenforfreedom association. Her subject: "Sharia vs. Human Rights." On a table there are German books with titles like "The Jihad System" and "Endangered Freedom." On the wall there's a photo of a man whose back is covered in cuts, supposedly having been flogged because he converted from Islam to Christianity. Hoffmann-Polzoni wears a black frilled dress and speaks with a tempered voice. The vision of Islam she paints is a grim one: stonings, crucifixions and decapitations are expected by Muslims as penalties for purported crimes like adultery. "Just imagine that," she whispers. Anti-Muslim speech has found its way into the center of society, stoked by politicians like Hans-Jürgen Irmer, the deputy floor leader for the CDU in Hesse. He warned state parliament that "Islam is set on global domination," and that "we don't need more Muslims, we need fewer." The Iraq conflict spilled onto the streets of Herford in North Rhine-Westphalia on Wednesday evening as hundreds of members of the Yazidi faith clashed with supporters of Islamist terrorist group ISIS... Around 300 Yazidi took to the streets in the early evening. They were demonstrating against the attacks on members of their faith in Syria and Iraq and a religiously-motivated attack against their community earlier that day, Herford police reported. The police decided to intervene after a large group of hooded people started attacking passers-by in the town center, with at least one person injured. The police used pepper spray to control the mob, confiscating tools and one firearm, and took the details of 86 people involved... Six people were arrested after the fight, most of them Islamist supporters from Chechnya and all of them known to the police... The ISIS has been persecuting members of the ethnically Kurdish Yazidi, who mostly live around the town of Mosul in northern Iraq. A new type of anti-immigration protest is sweeping across Germany, as thousands take to the streets against what they say is the growing “Islamization” of the country. The new protests, which began in the city of Dresden in the former East Germany, feature no neo-Nazi slogans and have nothing to do with the traditional far right. Instead the demonstrators have adopted the old rallying call of the protests against the East German communist regime that brought down the Berlin Wall 25 years ago, “Wir sind das Volk”, or “We are the people”. They say they want to preserve Germany’s Judeo-Christian Western culture... Thousands have defied sub-zero temperatures to join weekly marches each Monday in Dresden under the banner of Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of Europe, or Pegida. A German bishop has called for dialogue with participants in the weekly anti-Islamization demonstrations in Dresden, saying the protestors "feel estranged from our society and from our political leadership”. The Bishop of Dresden, Heiner Koch, warned against ostracizing members of Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the Christian West, or Pegida, and not listening to their grievances. But there is a growing opposition to the marches, which have been attracting thousands since they began in October. Bishop Koch told the German newspaper Tagespost that despite claims that the group’s members were racist and neo-Nazi, polls suggested that “only 25 per cent” of Pegida members were opposed to Islam itself. “All the pigeonholes people are trying to force Pegida marchers into, be they xenophobic, racist or neo-Nazi, are too simple,” he said. Many who flocked to Dresden every Monday from all over Germany “feel estranged from our society and from our political leadership,” Koch said, and added that it was a mistake not to allow people to express their worries for fear of political incorrectness. He revealed that a group called Christians for Pegida, which included three Protestant pastors, had approached him with their concerns after several Monday marches. It was “absolutely essential” to dialogue with such people even if one disagreed with their views, the bishop said. His views contrast sharply with those of Bishop Felix Genn of Münster, who has forbidden one of his priests who joined a Pegida march from preaching. A mathematics professor at a German university was fired after he gave students problems to solve in class critical of Islam... According to one student in Berlin the professor (Wolfang Hebold) had made them calculate the relationship between Muslim populations and suicide bombings saying “we were to calculate the statistical relationship between the number of terrorist attacks and the proportion of Muslims in the population.” Students were also asked to calculate the rate of female genital mutilation in Egypt... Another university professor found himself in the same kind of trouble back in February when he made positive statements online about the PEGIDA protest movement. When the theologian Mouhanad Khorchide, who teaches at the University of Münster, published "Islam Is Compassion" in 2012, he received a variety of diverse reactions. Many non-Muslims celebrated the work as the revelation of a humanistic Islam: an Islam that no one needs to fear. This feeling arose in part because the author created a picture of God that is not "interested in the labels of Muslim or Christian or Jewish, believer or nonbeliever." Korchide threw out the idea that Koran verses that appear violent or hostile toward women or non-Muslims may be valid for all eternity. He wanted them to be viewed as the words of a bygone era. It seemed that the professor, with the swoop of his pen, managed to brush aside all those reservations that made people wonder whether Islam really "belonged to Germany," as former President Christian Wulff said famously in a 2010. One might even have thought that Muslims would offer Khorchide a pat on the back. No pat on the back - on the contrary. On the website for DITIB, Germany's Turkish Islamic union and the country's largest Muslim organization, one can read that Khorchide's statements were a "rejection of the teachings of classical Islam" and an "insult to Muslim identity." Police were able to arrest a suspect early Wednesday morning after a woman was knocked unconscious having been pushed onto the tracks of the Hamburg S-Bahn underground railway by a Moroccan illegal...
